I said it before above, but...instincts.

Instincts I just take to mean the process to observe process and problem solve quickly, faster than conscious thought usually is.

It's a knack, some have it, they see patterns of movement and action and arrive quickly at deductions that work.

When I was a high school LB, mostly charged with playing the run, I could "see" RBs and what they were doing and where they were headed, but I never actually SAW them---I saw a blur of color (the uniform) and could sort of tell which way the blur was headed.

I wasn't very good (well sometimes I was) but still that's my way of understanding " football instinct."
