Good question.
Considering that finding a consistent starter at TE in the 2nd round is a 50/50 proposition ( [
forums.colts.com] ) I'll offer this as a response: I hoped for more, but perhaps my hopes were unrealistic.
I would put it differently. Kendricks didn't pick himself. Did he play well? Yes...just not as a high volume receiving type TE. Between 2000 and 2015, 27 TEs were picked in round 2. 9 caught more passes than he did. 10 had more TDs. Does someone expect better from round 2? Okay. But, to me that's not a reason to act as if he was worse than he actually was, or to act as if he didn't have value.
I honestly have never cared about the "a round off when picked" stuff when it comes to anything other than 1st rounders. But that's okay. Either way, the discussion I was having was with those who said he had no value at all or who just basically dismissed him. (LK was the target of far far more animosity among some Rams fans than he deserves.) Well for several years he led Rams receivers (ie not RBs) in catch percentage and was a rare H-back type who could lead block from anywhere in the formation. That has value.
