I mean, if Long's a CB that defends passes so well...I'd think would get significant playing time...right?
I would think so. And if he plays well in support/relief of the starters then we'll see more hidden gems of PFF ratings.
However, there are so many college players that post crazy stats that seem implausible....and are the highest rated for any player in the draft....
then, that player doesn't get drafted. So, what to make of that?!!
PFF/analytic stats are helpful, at times, but with any stat context matters greatly...nuthin happens in a vacuum. Maybe it's just about finding the best grouping of analytics/stats for a position that really give insight to the future performance of a player. I think the NFL is still trying to figure that out about various analytics (Moneyball styled PFF systems).
Great part is that we will see in the case of Long AND Henderson & others...
if there's fire under all that PFF/analytic smoke.
In this case though we're not looking at a PFF grade. This is an ordinary stat just based on play. In college, Long defensed/intercepted 20 passes. He also allowed 18 completions. That means he defended more passes (including INTs) than he allowed catches. To use another analogy to go along with the one Alo gives, it would be as if your at-bat numbers included more homeruns than strikes against.
