That is phenominal! They only went after him 10% of the time and only completed about 30% of their passes when going at him. Incredible.
It seems to me that with a stat like this one, its a wonder that he was not a first round CB.
Do the first round corners have such a stat on their resume?
The NFL doesn't only draft based on production. They heavily weight physical traits and how that projects to a player's potential.
That's how an Aaron Donald can be drafted 12th instead of 1st. He didn't fit the prototypical size for the position.
But here's what I've noticed: the Rams have tilted their draft evaluation scales more towards production in the last couple of years.
Look at the last sentence below of what McVay said about Long:
Quote
McVay on David Long “When you get into David Long, the character is off the charts and he is a guy that has a skillset, the ability to come off and play man coverage, be able to play physical and be able to stay in guys’ back hips and mirror,” McVay said Friday. “You can see he is able cancel routes out as he goes and he just shows up and in a really, really productive defense over the last couple years. This was one of the best corners based off a production standpoint and another guy that loves football.”
Production and players who love football are two things at the top of the list of the type of player they want.
