I am not going to claim he is or is not a top 10 talent. But the PFF comments about him are a good example of why nitpicking prospects can cause teams to lose out on long term talent. Being raw and inconsistent should not be viewed as a negative. The desire to draft finished products is just a miss in my opinion. Draft based on what someone can do and what your coaches feel they can help him become. Not what he is in his last year of college ball.
I would think Tillery is squarely in the conversation at 31 (or after a trade back) assuming his work ethic and mentality are a fit for the team culture.
I think this is a reasonable perspective within limits. The player shouldn’t be too much potential. GRob comes to mind. In his case, he was too raw to be taken that high. And my fear from the beginning with him was that he was too raw in the #1 area (pass pro) that his position needed to be good in.
Tillery isn’t nearly in the same boat as GRob. The biggest complaint I’ve heard about him, here and elsewhere, is the inconsistency. It’s been said that he runs hot and cold. However, most reports state that he did not do that this last season. He had corrected that tendency. That is a huge point in his favor. So in his case, I would say that what he was in his last year of college ball indicates a huge sign of growth and should actually help him.
