RamsDynasty
all that "Todd was much more injured than anyone realized" talk no doubt burned a bridge with Todd as well as with the Rams FO that was trying hard to keep a lid on the situation. Though CJ did come help us out of a jam, he came off a little smug in interviews, and gave an air of, " I can take Todd's spot/do as well as him", whereas I never got that impression from Brown. He may feel the same way in his heart of hearts but he had the good sense to never say it aloud. Which is why all things being equal the Rams with the Malcolm route, hell at these prices they could have kept them both but never seemed to even try to make that effort. That speaks volumes.
This theory could explain the Rams' apparent course reversal. Immediately after the Super Bowl, McVay and Snead were practically gushing about CJ and McVay said that they "absolutely wanted to bring him back!"
And then no offer once free agency opened?
I know there is coach speak but usually if you have no interest it's not accompanied by such a high level of enthusiasm. See McVay's comments regarding TruJ, Suh and others. They are much less definitive about their interest, much less enthusiasm.
It feels like something changed to me.
Wait, how do we know there was no offer?
It seems to me in cases like that the team and player exchange numbers to get a ballpark idea what a signing would take.
Sounds to me like CJ's camp was asking more than the Rams were willing to offer.
It also looks to me like CJ signed with Detroit for less because there were no other options.
