He needs the 3 WR formation to spread the defense out. It also likely explains why McVay was so committed to it over the last 2 seasons.
As defense have adapted McVay has adapted and wants to run more 12 personnel which allows defenses to stack the box. Gurley is not the same RB when he faces stacked boxes and that is standing out. Watch the NO game and how the run game picked up when CJ came in. It was also critical in getting Goff settled down and taking some heat off of him
I know Gurley is not 100% but as this has played out it seems McVay is more comfortable with CJ because CJ allows the Rams to play a more physical style and run the ball gaining positive yards even when they are running out of more obvious run formations.
