his mindset is established even when he coulda used that strategy on 1st down instead of throwing it. In fact, Buck/Aikman were surprised he wasn't killing the clock already...so I'm not so sure the game was in the bag with the PI call...Payton seemed real really inent on getting a TD and so, I disagree with you that it was an automatic win for the Saints. Payton wanted to win his way...and that may have been the problem. imo
We just disagree on this one, zn.
btw - no doubt it was a missed call...but there were so many other non-calls that I'm not sure that's a rabbitt hole the NFL will ultimately wanna go down. Just like changing the OT rules for the Pats game cuz the Chiefs couldn't stop Brady and get the ball back. Hell, the Rams stopped the Brees HoF in OT...and showed nuthin is written.
PI gives them a first down. At that point they only needed to run the clock down until kicking a FG and they've won. I don;t want to mindread Payton on that. I don't think either of us can. But that was what he would have had--a chance to run clock down, kick for 3, and win.
