I think the one rationale missing from your list is the actual culprit -- the idea that the refs "let them play" in the playoffs. I think they were determined to let the players decide this very tight game and decided to err on the side of swallowing their whistles.
If people would just listen to the stated facts this whole "missed" call thing would have a different tone (by "people" I mean the media and fans in general, not posters here).
NRC said he turned to the ref and was surprised it was not called. The ref told him the ball was tipped.
Now, I've seen no video evidence it was tipped (which surely would have surfaced). But that's not the point. Everyone is blaming the ref for "missing" the call when he didn't miss it at all. He saw clearly that it was an early hit. However he
thought the ball was tipped making PI impossible.
I guess a conspiracy theorist could say that was just a convenient answer to cover a "let 'em play" mentality or worse. And for all the Saints fans out there, if you want to believe that: no problem. I encourage you to show the NFL what's what and boycott all future Saints games. We'd love to play in a quieter Superdome next time since you're gonna stay home and have your righteous indignation and integrity, right?
