Personally I think an even better stat is red zone touchdowns.
Is it better to get to the RZ 3 times a game and score twice (67%)?
Or get there 5 times and score 3 times (60%)?
I think both stats are informative.
(scoring offense rank, RZ attempts per game, RZ TD rank)
KC (1, 2, 3)
NO (2, 3, 5)
Rams (3, 1, 18)
Chargers (4, 11, 15)
Indy (5, 5, 9)
Pittsburgh (6, 19, 1)
Seattle (7, 14, 8)
NE (8, 12, 12)
Tampa Bay (9, 4, 17)
Chicago (10, 13, 10)
Notes / Observations:Among top 10 scoring offenses, only 1 team (Pittsburgh) is not in the top 15 in RZ attempts per game. They make up for that by being the best in RZ efficiency.
Among top 10 scoring offenses, only 2 teams (Rams, Tampa Bay) are outside of the top 15 in RZ TD rate. Like Pittsburgh, the Rams make up for that by being the best in the other RZ category. Tampa Bay makes up for it by ranking 4th in RZ attempts per game.
The Chargers seem to be an anomaly. They're ranked fairly low in both RZ categories, albeit in the top 15 in both, yet are the #4 scoring offense. I don't know how to explain that.
The top 5 offenses are top 5 in at least one of the categories (with the exception of the inexplicable Chargers).
The top 6-10 offenses are top 10 in at least of the categories (with the exception of NE who also seem to have a high scoring rank relative to the RZ metrics.)
Nothing else really stands out to me as surprising. Besides the teams mentioned or explained above, all of the rest of the teams fall in line with what one would expect.
