I'm Catholic and went to an all boy high school.
My junior year, we were walking into our Algebra/Trig class. As we walked in, we saw drops of blood on the floor.
We asked guys leaving what happened...and we were told that one of the boys said "F" you to Brother Joe. Well, prior to going into the religious order, Brother Joe was in the Navy and boxed while he served. Upon getting the "F" bomb from this kid, Brother Joe punched him in the nose!
Now...today...what would happen? We would get a cell phone video...it would viral...it would be on national news...Brother Joe would be suspended...and people would look to get him kicked out of the religious order.
Upon learning about this...what did we say/do? We looked at each other and said "What an idiot! Who in their right mind would say that to Brother Joe?" And then, we laughed.
As for the going home after school...my guess is that guy didn't say one word to his parents. Why? Well, it's likely his dad would have given him a second bloody nose!
Finally...as most all of us feel today...that guy...like us, looks back on those moments and thinks..."I got what I deserved!"..and laughs about it.
There is abuse and there is punishment...and frankly...it isn't a fine line. They are vastly different.
