Even in the days when it is normal and customary for a kid to get spanked, should a parent knock a kid unconscious that wouldn't have been tolerated.
Everyone recognized that there was a line in corporal punishment over which one did not cross. Inflicting pain as punishment was one thing; damaging the child to the point that medical attention was needed was another.
As an old timer, a Boomer, I get it that times have changed in regards to what is legal (depending on the state) but also in what is politically correct.
it sounds to me that AD is dealing far more with the politically correct issue than with legalities.
But I will also say that from a personal level, anyone that would have told me how to raise my children, and how to discipline them, would have received an earful that more or less tells you that its none of your business.
