There's an expression in coaching 'success leaves a trail' and he gets that by stealing ideas from everywhere.
The only ego he demonstrates is very occasionally in play calling, and sometimes that can be a good thing.
That's what I'm pretty sure people like Cowherd is referring to.
He's the anti-Fisher.
Yes he had some talent, but Fisher couldn't get anything from that talent and McVay has got everything.
The only legit counter-argument to what I am saying is this:
Name any coaches, at any time, no matter how good, who pulled off an overnight turnaround WITHOUT inheriting talent.
My point has nothing to do with old Fisher wars and different ideas of why they lost before. It certainly has nothing at all to do with underestimating McV---I am on record as saying, multiple times, that I think McV is the best Rams coach I've known since following them with the possible exception of Vermeil, but then I also think he is capable of supassing Vermeil (the only difference between DV and McV is that DV had to rebuild, McV only had to renovate and add on).
So. My point has to with the entire NFL in all years. It applies universally.
As I said, the only counter to what I am saying would be to name ANY coaches who pulled off an overnight turnaround and DID NOT inherit a lot of talent.
That would have a lot more to do with what I am actually saying.
