How many players on this team have this Rams coaching staff failed to get near full potential out of? And, I know, Peters was mentioned earlier, but he's playing through that calf injury and not 100%. Maybe Troy Hill isn't as good as he could be? Anyone else?
And on the other hand, how many guys have exceeded their perceived potential greatly? Here's just a few (for some of these the breakout was last year, but it was a breakout):
- Cory Littleton
- Austin Blythe
- John Sullivan
- John Johnson
- Cooper Kupp
- Robert Woods
- JoJo Natson
I mean, could you put Jared Goff in that list, too, after lots of folks had written him off as a bust? Not sure.
The point is: yes, Fowler may not work out. That's a valid perspective. But I also have every reason to believe that this coaching staff can elevate his game. Especially with Donald, Suh, and Brockers giving the other team's O-line all they can handle already.
I think what you have there is 2 things.
Good coaches.
Good players.
I really don't believe it;s a case of coaches making good players out of nothing.
For example Johnson is one of the most recent in a long line of good finds at DB.
The minute they signed Woods, some of us were arguing he was a good one, in spite of what happened in Buffalo.
And IMO the people who wrote Goff off as a bust were just wrong. Put Goff on any good team with decent protection and he's good IMO. The fact that McV runs a great offense is gravy when it comes to that...he takes advantage of Goff's talent as much as Goff thrives in the system.
So none of that makes me believe that Fowler will automatically come through. If he does IMO it's because good coaches were given a good player.
