The Rams didn't care if they won this game and it really doesn't matter. I think they just wanted to throw the bottom of the roster out there and see what they had, which it turns out didn't look all that promising save for a few guys. I respect Speed's take but I tend to think it wasn't a matter of intensity, rather just a lower talent level going against a higher talent level. After all, Peyton had some 1s and 2s playing into the 2nd half.
It's not just that they didn't care if they won, they didn't care if they played well.
I don't even think they were scouting players.
I think they were just stuck having to play a 4th preseason game and it was an afterthought in every single way.
....
I think the players cared even if it didn't look like it. IMO, the players were either trying to make this team (or another one) they just weren't put in the best position to succeed. It also didn't help that N.O. was playing some first and second stringers, going for it on 4th downs, challenging plays, going for onsides kicks, etc and Payton clearly want to win this game more than McVay did.
I agree with your first post about the coaches not practicing or "prepping" for this game as they were most likely more concerned on getting ready for the Raiders...and it showed.
#HelmetHornsMatter
“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.
“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
