I don't see any reason why AD would be in a rush to sign. I think the August 8 deadline regarding his service time and that start of training camp are the pressure points where we might see a deal.
Pressure is off Demoff a bit after signing Gurley and Cooks. He can go the Franchise root without and keep AD for 3 years and justify it now (Goff/Peters) if he has too. He has all the leverage but does he want to destroy the relationship using his leverage. Of course AD agent may need to be taught a lesson about leverage and doing what is best for your client. I think AD has already lost money not signing a deal last year but not sure the numbers would have been last year versus this year. I know he will loss money if Rams pay him based on his current contract and franchise him for the next 2 seasons. He losses money and takes all the risk which is malpractice on behalf of the agent if you ask me.
AD doesn't have to sign by the 8th. He can report on the 8th without a new contract and they can continue to work on an extension all season if it comes to that.
In terms of "shots fired," I just don't think professional negotiations work that way. As was pointed out before when Cooks was signed, a team can have multiple negotiations going on at the same time, and they all have their own timeframe and issues to resolve and if they're professional about it, they aren't "sending messages" with who they sign first or 2nd.
As VB says.

FYI on #Rams extension with Todd Gurley and how it (doesn't) impact Aaron Donald's situation. As Les Snead said, these deals are unto themselves and negotiated simultaneously.
...
All it really shows is that the Rams are willing and able to take care of their core players....they tried to do this a year ago with Donald. The deal still isn't done.....which leads most to believe this is on Donald and his agent....
Louis Riddick said today "you see these deals and you know they're
trying to get a deal done with Donald"
He believes a deal will get done soon and so do I
Well it shows the Rams are willing and able to pay Cooks and Gurley.
Donald's contract represents the more groundbreaking one because he will be the first non-qb to break the 20 M bar. Why isn't it done yet? Well based on the things we actually know, it's equally possible to say right now that Donald wants too much, the Rams are offering too little, or both, or neither thing and there is no substantial problem.
No agent in his right mind looks at the fact that a team signs someone else and panics. And in terms of "pressure" perceptions, I don't think any of that is the least bit real. I think it's just something we fans say.
And of course they're trying to get the deal done with Donald. I don't think anyone ever doubted that. But it is going to be a tougher deal to get done.
....
Of course not, but like you said, it changes the narrative quite a bit..... all those people that were saying the " Rams can't sign their star players" are now seeing that they absolutely can.
The perception has changed for many....including some of the people on this board.
It changes nothing real.
What you call "the narrative" is nothing but message board talk.
No responsible agent in his right mind sits around thinking "what's the narrative on fan message boards."
Besides, everything you say assumes that the agents need pressure on them, and I only point out that that assumption is just one speculation among others when in fact we don't know if it's even the least bit true.
You have no idea what's going on in these negotiations and why they're not done yet. I know that because I too have no idea. All baseless assumptions aside.
...
....
You are missing the point..... I'm not talking about the message board narrative, I'm talking a national narrative from regular media like NFL Live to all of social media.
The perception that the Rams are "lowballing" ( your favorite term) is changing for those that thought they were.....not just on a message board level either.
My guess is and always has been that Donald will sign an extension by August 7th in the $21-22M per year range.
If he shows up to camp without a deal or holds out past August 7th he should sue his agent for malpractice
The point is just not that hard to miss. I disagree with it.
Including his range. I think his range is more 23-24 M. So I vote differently on that too.
And if he shows up without a contract it just means they will keep working on one.
We don't see any of this the same way.
So I stick with my vote and sign off, opting for "agree to disagree" mode.
Fair enough?
