As I remember it, Everett had just led the Rams on a 4 game winning streak, including road playoff victories in Philly and NY.
He also played very well in both an early season win vs. the soon to be SB champion Whiners, AND had the Rams on the brink of a blowout in the second game late in the season. If I remember correctly, the Rams were up (I could be wrong) by something like 27-13 and had it second and goal from inside the 5 yard line to start the fourth quarter. A fumbled snap, which was followed by one of 2 ninety something yard passes for TDs that probably went a combined 15 yards forward. I also remember a fumbled kickoff return late in that game, that contributed to that loss.
Fact is, the 89 Niners were one of the best teams ever and the Rams nearly swept them, and would've had a shot at the division if the defense doesn't collapse in the second matchup.
Sure, Everett had a bad game, but couldn't his and many other players bad games be more attributed to having to play, in essence 4 consecutive playoff games to just get to that championship game, the last 3 of which were East coast road games.
