big big difference

If we're only talking about that small difference then a drastic action like a trade demand wouldn't be necessary.

But I don't think we should assume that that's the type of difference we're talking about.

I've set forth some pretty sound logic before arguing that the difference could possibly be $6M per year. If so, that's a substantial difference that warrants a knock out, drag out fight.

I have heard nothing that suggests the fight isn't over money.

Yeah we're all in the dark. No one really knows the amounts. The speculative buzz about what's going on is all management oriented so we don't even know what the other side would say. They could be 6 M apart, and so on. Who knows.

BUT the key thing to clarify is that the trade talk has to do with whether he would passively sit still for a tag amount. The tag amount for a DT (this year anyway) is around one third less than the free market amount that gets associated with him. And the only reason I keep bringing that is up is to respond to the people who actually argue that tagging AD is a good idea and a good move (cause that way you get him for cheap). Well setting aside the fact that you don't do that to a star player with as much professional pride and commitment as Donald has. You don't treat a guy like that that way. Either way, if the Rams did plan to just tag him for cheap, he has the recourse of a trade. So it's likely that he wouldn't let himself be treated that way.

...

Tell that to the Steelers who have no problem tagging arguably the best non quarterback offensive player in the game....
is it fair that his teammate Brown had almost 500 yards less, 2 less TD's and over 300 less touches gets $17M per year and Bell can't even get a contract for millions less?

I don't think teams are worried about public outcry for tagging players who don't want to sign a deal....

The tag amount for RBs is right up there with what a top RB would want on the market. It's a high relative to other backs. Bell being tagged this year makes him the highest paid back in football, with the 2nd in place coming in at more than 6 M less.

In contrast the tag amount for a DT has problems when it comes to Donald.

1. It's players who are just not in AD's class so the tag amount comes in (in 2018) at 6 M less that AD's MINIMAL market value. (DT tag = 14 M). Bell doesn't face anything like a tag that pays him one third less than what his market value would be.

2. There is no tag amount for "top 2-3 defenders in the league" which is how Donald will get paid.

I suppose they could tag him as a DE but then that's still below his value (DE tag = 17 M, whereas the assumption is that Donald's market value is north of 20 M).

And you put it as the Steelers having no problem tagging Bell. That's not the issue. The issue is whether IF tagged Donald will accept it or demand a trade. So maybe if it gets to that the Rams would have no problem tagging Donald. And...Donald could have no problem walking away from that and demanding a trade, since in his case, unlike with Bell, the tag comes short of his minimal market worth.

This has nothing to do with public outcry either way. As this entire thread shows, for a while now, a star or top player who demands a trade rarely if ever does NOT get traded. In fact I don't think we have any examples of players under those circumstances who DIDNT' get traded.
