If he can force a trade he isn't being controlled.
And why would he willingly be underpaid for a total of 7 years.
To be fair 3 years of that would be just being a rookie under the new CBA.
But the new CBA gives 1st round picks the option to re-negotiate after their third year. All others that I know of who entered into negotiations after year 3 got their big 2nd contracts, some being the highest paid at their position as a result (at least in the year they were extended).
So that would be a 4th year as a rookie, a 5th year with the 5 year option, and 2 tag years---all of which badly underpay him in relation to his real market value.
Why would he willingly submit to that when he can just demand a trade and get paid his due.
And yes he has control over where he's traded. All he has to do is tell the Rams "I will not sign an extension with that team" and any deal is off. Tru did that in 2017. The Saints offered a 2nd rounder for him and Tru just said he would not sign an extension with them. The trade was off. (Though Tru, unlike AD, was well compensated by the tag amount. Donald's tag amount will be well below his market value.)
If it's me I don't work for far less than my value if I have options. I only do that, and resentfully, if I have no options. AD has options (after this year anyway).

We are presumably talking about the rather small difference between $22 and maybe $24 million per? Or at least thereabouts?
If so, that’s not a huge gap, really. Not worth AD burning bridges over. And not worth the Rams dragging their feet over, either.

As I suspect, there are other non-financial factors involved that have caused this year and a half snag? Hmmmmm...
If we're only talking about that small difference then a drastic action like a trade demand wouldn't be necessary.
But I don't think we should assume that that's the type of difference we're talking about.
I've set forth some pretty sound logic before arguing that the difference could
possibly be $6M per year. If so, that's a substantial difference that warrants a knock out, drag out fight.
I have heard nothing that suggests the fight isn't over money.

Meaning, an $18 million offer from the Rams seems far too low. If that’s their offer then I switch camps.
This is just going by my gut 43...but I suspect Donald is asking somewhere around $25M.
And again we don't really know for sure but judging from all the evidence, I think the Rams current offer is in the neighborhood of $19M. That offer would put him in highest salary for a defender territory but not necessarily make him the highest. It would fit the language of "competitive" which has been used to describe the offer and it would align with Demoff's description of "among the highest paid." It also wouldn't contradict other descriptors reported such as the Rams "
are prepared to make him the highest paid" or "give him a deal that's
probably over $20M"....etc. since none of those terms indicate a current solid offer.
So $25M to $19M wouldn't surprise me if that's the difference. I'd be surprised if the difference is only $2M.
