The July 16th deadline to sign a long term deal is fast approaching. This is around the point when the Broncos caved in to Von Miller's demands. So it's too soon to say how they're going.

As for the comparison to AD's situation it's not a great one. Bell on his tag is not only the highest paid RB, but the tag amount of $14.5M is pretty close to what he's looking for on a long term deal and the market value of a RB.

OTOH, Dona'd's estimated tag amount of $14M will be FAR below what he's requesting and the market value of the best defender.

Because of that drastic difference don't expect the two players to handle their negotiations the same. Bell probably won't have to follow through on his threats; Donald might.

Point is is that the Steelers have done exactly what some say the Rams won't do or would "look bad" doing... tagging their star player...TWICE

After all his threats of a holdout and trade me talk, he ended up caving and playing for the Steelers under the tag last year, which heavily underpaid what HE is worth.


He is arguably the best non QB offensive player in the game and he is getting paid less then a guy like Sammy Watkins....it isn't fair, but it's the control factor and the "market" that drive it.

Bell is getting the worst of it.... Steelers aren't talking about making him the highest paid (non Q offensive player the game, not even close....

At least Donald is getting the respect he deserves form his team by even mentioning making him "amongst the highest paid" three years before they even have to.

Ah yeah I missed that point. I never really got into how it would make the Rams look. I do think they'll do it if it came to that.

I was responding to your question posited of how are things going for Bell in his negotiations.

The tag didn't heavily underpay him last year. He was paid 12.1M which made him by far the highest paid RB in the league.

The market does suck for Bell. The RB position has been undervalued for years now which is why there is no talk about making him the highest paid non-QB offensive player. In addition, he unfortunately plays at a position where the body declines rapidly and performance drops off a cliff after so many years. This makes teams very reluctant to pay him in accordance to how he affects the game.

But fair or not, Bell's tag amount and what he's asking for per year are relatively close. OTOH, Donald's tag amount and his salary request are worlds apart. So while the team technically doesn't have to pay him for another three years, it's in his best interest to force the issue and make them pay him earlier...or trade him.
