Here's a partial list of 12 guys drafted in 2014 along with Donald who are still to get a new deal...
Jadeveon Clowney (2014-2018)
Khalil Mack (2014-2018)
Jake Matthews (2014-2018)
Anthony Barr (2014-2018)
Taylor Lewan (2014-2018)
Odell Beckham, Jr. (2014-2018)
Aaron Donald (2014-2018)
Zack Martin (2014-2018)
C.J. Mosley (2014-2018)
HaHa Clinton-Dix (2014-2018)
Deone Bucannon (2014-2018)
Bradley Roby (2014-2018)
Wonder why so many of the teams are have yet to sign these players? Some great players on this list. I wonder how many guys on this list will be with other teams next year.
Donald was one of the few who took advantage of a perk 1st rounders get, where they can opt in their third year to re-negotiate. '
A few already have done that btw. Meaning, have taken the 3rd year option and have gotten paid. One example is Frederick.
Martin is an interesting case because they already paid Smith and Frederick. Do you pay
3 lineman at such a heavy rate? Frederick avgs. 9.4 M a year and Smith is 12.2 M a year. The top guards have gotten 12-13 M, which means it will be more for Martin. Do you put 36 or more M on 3 OL? I dunno maybe they will, but it would look unique to me.
...
If the Cowboys let Martin walk, I think I will be in the majority of people in shock.
But the big takeaway for me with all this is that the Rams are viewed as being outliers because they have not paid Donald yet. When in actuality the Rams aren't much different from many other teams.
No the Rams ARE in a different situation.
Donald is the only player right now who opted for the 3rd year option and then did NOT get a contract yet. That's 2 things combined--opted, no deal yet.
Others haven't opted, or can't (because they;re not 1st rounders).
And there have been some who did opt and then did get a contract (like Frederick).
Just saying it's contract year for some isn't the same thing.
Donald is the only one in his situation.
Mack didn't opt for a 3rd year thing.
