The Rams told him the 5th or 6th round. How likely is it that the Rams would knowingly tell a player where they are taking him and actually take him at least a round earlier if something didn't change in where they expected him to go. I guess you could say they purposely tell a player a later round and expect his agent to spread that around.

Regardless, I think Snead knew there was a good chance Allen wouldn't be there for their next pick. And Allen was one of a cluster of players they wanted with their first 4th round pick.

In any event, there are a lot of mixed opinions on this pick.

Yes there are mixed opinions. Mine is that they liked him for a lot of good reasons, and that Kromer has coached his share of centers and knows what he likes.

There is an "on the other hand" to that. On the other hand, coaches are not always effective scouts. Hanifan was behind a long list of very undistinguished draft picks (Yes there was Pace who was kind of a no brainer but there was also .Travis Scott, John St. Clair, Kaulana Noa, Andrew Kline, Cameron Spikes, & Glenn Rountree). Boudreau has a more positive record. He beat the drum for Robinson apparently, but 2 current starters were Boudreau guys, and he was always good with vet pick-ups like Barksdale. So an OL coach is not always a real OL scout, but they aren't always Hanifan level bad at it either.

Kromer I have more faith in than Hanifan when it comes to this.

Allen represents a mix of toughness, smarts, and aggressiveness. If he works out, picking him in 2018 will be a good thing, since they will need to shore up the OL in 2019. It would be nice obviously to get a head start on that.

I agree that once you get past the 3rd round, the round a guy is picked in doesn't mean that much. I mean if someone is debating whether a guy should go in the 4th or 6th, then really, it's splitting hairs. Besides, as you say, chances are very good that other teams were interested, and they had Allen targeted. Besides even if you don't like the 4th round spot for Allen, getting Kiser and Obo in the 5th was good. So it all balances out anyway.
