He does what Donald would not. He re-sign's a year or two early(year4?), for a less, but get's the BIG bonus and as much long term security as a RB can have.... Otherwise is going to be tough for him...
He gets that and more signing with another good team as a free agent.
And it's not just what "Donald wouldn't do." It's what the vast majority of NFL FAs won't do, and for good reason.

Maybe, maybe not. He might not make it to free agency. After this season he would be facing two one year deals (5th year option and franchise tag year). One significant injury in either of those seasons could ruin his chances for a big contract. If he re-signed after this season he'd be set. He doesn't have to worry about trying to make it to year 7 when he'd be a true free agent. There is a huge risk for him in waiting.
Also, teams look at RB's differently than other positions. They are cautious with a 26 year old RB with 6 years of wear on him.....as compared to a QB with the same level of experience. There would be zero concerns about hitting the wall for a 26 year old QB
