....and is maybe franchised one year (2020).....and then leaves as a free agent.
Here's Why:
1) He will have played 6 seasons at that point (going into 2021).
2) Running Backs hit the wall faster than almost any other position
3) Currently LeVeon Bell wants $14.5 per season on a long term contract
4) Tight end and Safety are the only positions with a lower franchise tag amount than RB. Teams avoid investing big money in RB when possible.
5) There seems to be quality RB's available in almost every draft.
6) The Rams have multiple other young stars who will need to get paid. You can't keep everyone.
To me, that all adds up to: No long term contract for Gurley. But I could be wrong.
I think along those lines too.
You only get so many players among your top contract guys, and a back is among the most expendable.
Last year 3 of the top 10 rushing teams had a rare, high 1st round star back like Elliot or Gurley. But then 7 didn't.
1 Jacksonville Jaguars (Fournette)
2 Dallas Cowboys (Elliot)
3 Philadelphia Eagles
4 Carolina Panthers
5 New Orleans Saints
6 Buffalo Bills
7 Minnesota Vikings
8 Los Angeles Rams (Gurley)
9 Kansas City Chiefs
10 New England Patriots
