of said contract. It sounds crazy but look at it this way.

Cooks is owed 8.5 mil this year. You extend him 5 years and say 70 million. Now he is basically on a 6 year 78.5 mil. dollar deal with the first year costing you still 8.5 million. There is no money saved on an extension.

Now, you restructure the new 6 year deal and take (for example) 6 million of this years base salary from the 8.5 million and turn it into a prorated bonus that will now be guaranteed over the remaining 5. So in this scenario he gets paid 2.5 million this year (his new lowered cap #) and adds 1.2 million per year more to his remaining 5 years (the 6 million converted bonus divided by 5 years)

Why would anyone do this? Because every player wants guaranteed money.

This is exactly what the team is probably trying to do as we speak.

I'd try to get him to sign an extension for 3 years $48 mil, it actually works out to about 4 years $56 mil and a bargain price of $14m per year.

Players will take less to have a chance to win and also build their brand in a a place like LA.
