I think your point is right on. If you like your team, but you know there is a limit on payroll, then in order to stay with the team, don't go for your max contract. If you like your team, then know that some of the people you like and are contributing make a small percentage of what you're seeking to make. Take less money. Stay in the team and you won't have hurt feelings because your salary can fit with a plan.
I get that some teams are dumb. But players aren't sad to leave dumb teams.
Quinn didn't hire Wade, switch to a 3/4, and also choose to injure himself, and then take a while before returning to a decently effective level of play.
All of which were reasons contributing to the trade.
Though we fans love to invent reasons why players should not earn what they can earn in the NFL.
