Donald is rightfully trying to break the bank. He is by far the best player on Defense in football.
His fifth year option and the Rams franchising him is still a bargain for the Rams.

1-Why sign him if it doesn't benefit the teams cap as much as the fifth year option and a couple franchise tags (not ridiculous for DTs)?
2-Why Peyton Manning him....meaning kill your cap and quality depth so you can't sign Gurley and Goff.
3-He runs out of Franchise Tags when it's time to tag Goff.
4-After his fifth year option sign Gurley or replace him. He'll be cheaper than Donald, but five years in won't he start his decline? Not worth a long extension.
5-Trade? Not for a couple years.

My point is signing Donald while winning and having depth may be impossible. Keep him until you can't.

1, Because you don't keep lowballing your best player and a hard-working team leader and star, especially when there's no need to. That just alienates the team.
2. You can have a cap that includes Donald, Goff, and several other high contracts. The difference is, AD is one of the few players whose presence on the field benefits every other defender. According to a recent article, no defender in the league drew as many plays with multiple blockers as AD did, yet he also led the league in combined qb pressures. That means offenses pay special attention to him (freeing up others) and he STILL makes plays. Thats; invaluable. It's one reason the Rams were 4th in sacks and 4th in sack percentage last year even though, basically, they did not really have one single top outside rusher.
3. Tagging players forever means lowballing them and that's bad management because it means sending the team the wrong message. Work hard for us, do everything the right way, be productive, and, we will underpay you for years.
4,. You can't replace Donald. He's a generational transcendent player. You can replace Gurley. Of the 10 teams that led the league in yards per carry last year, only 2---Dallas and the Rams---had a high-picked star RB.
5. If he does not play for you because he won't risk his career without a longterm extension while you try to lowball him with tags, you have basically no choice but to trade him. Its either that or you don't get either his production or picks for him for a couple of years while you look bad being the only team that tried to sit on an all-league talent for years like that.
