See. When you take the emotion out of and look at it from a business decision standpoint, the Rams made the right move. Two years left on a rookie contract with only $1.7 mil in 2018 and $9 mil in the 2019 option year. But then, in 2020 he can be franchised tagged.
Essentially a year to year contract situation. If MP turns out to be an uncontrollable nut ball who is single handedly demolishing the Rams locker room, they can release him with no dead cap.
Rams have him for 2 years (a lifetime in the NFL) at WAAAAY below market value for an elite top 5 shut down CB.
As regards the 2nd and 4th the Rams are giving up. There is no more at risk here than there is for any draft pick. Most will bomb, some will score. The Rams DO know what they're getting in MP. They're getting a mega-talented, young, big, shut down CB who makes an INT darn near every other game. He locks down half a field. Against anybody. They are also getting a kid who has an authority problem, who is not disciplined, still has an awful lot of "the hood" left in him, and yet is by no means a criminal. At the same time he owns up to his mistakes, publically blames no one but himself.
As was pointed out in one video I watched; the ultra toxic Talib was brought into Denver, under Wade, and never was there an issue of any consequence. In fact, I'd love to see the Rams bring Talib in.
Frankly, this is a no-brainer for the Rams. But the key is a great locker room, a new-school HC, a legend and lovable DC, and a young team ascending. Plus, the Rams have pronounced themselves as risk-takers. Swing for the fences.
