I think that the defensive backs were “allowed to play” (beyond the rules). This concept that officials don’t want to decide the game is a misnomer. The NFL is a league of so many technical rules. Rules that are enforced during the season. So by not calling games the same way in the playoffs they infact decide the outcome of games. What I get from this is playoff experience means you know you can get away with a lot more in the playoffs than in the regular season. It means the Ram players didn’t fully grasp how aggressive the defensive backs would be and allowed to be. That would certainly explain why many of Goff’s passes seemed late. Timing on passes is effected by grabbing, holding and contact after 5 yards (and of course an absoute mugging in the endzone). When another player is holding on to you the window for the pass is very narrow. NFL football is getting harder and harder to watch.
