Everything you say is true, I would like to see our CBs play like that. But I can't help but feel even with their CBs playing like that we could have beaten them badly. McVays obsessive intent to use Gurley to run and catch screens when they obviously schemed their whole D to target him was a massive flaw. Then to see Goff slinging it and giving them panic attack after panic attack at the end just tells me McVay didn't see it until too late. If they simply used Gurley to draw their coverage toward him (like TA on jet sweeps) but aim to hit Watkins, Woods, Kupp and TE (if they could hold on to the ball!!!) we would have more than softened them up AND with more time to kill them.
But McVay more than satisfied me this year. We could have gone further but he screwed up his Wunder Kid award. My only expectation is that he learns from this, learns to adapt quicker, learn to see the obvious (his flaws) quicker into the game, and make the adjustments. This means he also need to better prepare the team to make those adjustments so that's a preparation issue.
I think it will be harder next year to win the division against SF. Goff will need to throw better passes and sooner for Sammy Watkins (if he is still with us) is going to catch those deep ones. I think our TE's are nothing special and as such if they don't improve significantly next year (and we don't draft any this year like Andrews or Geislecki or Fumagali) then we will suck the following year at TE vs. managing (like this year).
