It wasn't just a fan thing.
Good reporters made it clear that Snead WAS indeed on the ropes. .

Some lazy reporters speculated that he was in trouble. But he never was.

Here's how it went.

In DECEMBER Demoff made it clear that not just coaching, but administration and the personnel dept. were also under scrutiny. Administration btw is his own job. He was not excluding himself.

In JANUARY all that talk STOPPED. in January, before they interviewed McVay, Demoff openly and directly said that the team was NOT rebuilding and that the goal was to maximize talent that was on hand. THAT is an expression of confidence in the GM. It means that the personnel dept. had done its job. Under what possible conditions would Demoff be publicly saying that if in fact Snead were actually in trouble?

Obviously they did do an internal review between those December and January statements and decided that personnel, meaning of course Snead, had been doing its job.

Plus of course it's a REALLY bad idea to hire a new GM and a new head coach at the same time. Especially if you don't need to.

Plus of course it's also a REALLY bad idea to have your GM in on hiring the new head coach if his job is not secure. That's just plain bad management.

Plus of course, to add even more, it IS a REALLY good idea to keep your GM, who knows the team inside out, if you're bringing in a new head coach. That kind of continuity is crucial. In fact it's one of the reasons the Rams are doing so well right now. McVay arrived with a guy on hand, Snead, who could help him see who to keep and who not to. One direct result of that is that the Rams did not draft any new OL and decided (along with signing AW and JS) to go with the young guys they had on hand. That was a good decision. It was helped by having the guy who drafted them on hand as a key advisor.

So not only was Snead never in any ACTUAL trouble, the way they did things---keeping him, and relying on him to help hire the next coach--was really smart. Anf it worked too. Any other approach would have, in fact, been stupid, unnecessary, and wasteful, and the Rams were smart enough to see that. It paid off.
