Shaw was horrible. He went in cheap and demoralized many players, not on ED. I think he, more than anyone else, drove that once great franchise into the @#$%&-laden gutter. I think Georgia didn't have a clue so she let the bean counters run the team. There's a place for fiscal soundness, there's also a place to financial competitiveness. The team was managed horribly by incompetent penny-pinchers.
I partly agree.
But. Georgia told him to run it that way.
Not that he would have been an outstanding NFL exec if he ran it differently.
Georgia had no source of revenue outside the Rams. She was not a wealthy owner. So the Rams had to be fiscally tight and profitable. Someone like SK opens his wallet--for example, coaching hires (the present staff is expensive). Georgia had no wallet. She told Shaw to run the Rams like a fiscally tight business for profit. That's probably the main reason she hired him in the first place---to be her team accountant above all else.
I am not a Georgia hater. She had some good qualities and did some good things. I just say what I say here because that's part of a realistic picture.
Shaw, I view as just quite simply not qualified (though he did luck into Vermeil). In fact he wasn't much of a manager in general (eg. he let the JZ/Armey/Martz feuds linger and let JZ act like he really was qualified to be a general manager).
