Its the old worshiping of cloth (symbolic) over real life people. We love those who wear "our" uniforms but when they wear "other " uniforms -well that's a whole different issue. Assume for the moment that Goff scores a TD in Packer stadium and leaps into what he perceives to be a group of Ram fans. A Packer fan reacts as the Ram fan did. Would you say "Jared Goff is dead to me". Likely not for no other reason than the cloth Goff is wearing (i.e. he's one of us). Now reverse it: Goff wearing an Eagle uniform after signing a free agency contract and jumps into a group of Eagle fans in the Coliseum and same Ram fan reacts the same way. Your likely response -if you are consistent- would be "Goff is dead to me".

In sports we worship the symbolic nature of uniforms as opposed to the individual nature of the player. I suspect its always been that way.
