... that, had the Rams not hired McVay after last season, it was just a matter of time - months ... maybe days or weeks - before he was going to be a head coach in the NFL. He was certainly going to be hired after *this* season.
Sooooooo ... it wasn't like McVay was just desperate to take any ol' NFL job - because he considered it a last-chance opportunity. Everyone agrees that he was going to be the Next Big Thing in coaching circles.
In other words ... he took the Rams' job knowing full-well that Goff was going to be the quarterback. Forget all that, 'He didn't draft Goff' nonsense.
He may as well have drafted him! He signed on as Rams' coach knowing full-well Goff was his project to rehabilitate. And I don't think for a minute McVay thought, 'Well, if he fails and we go 3-13 or 4-12, I can always draft the quarterback I really want.' Hell, no! People like McVay aren't wired like that. He didn't take the Rams' job thinking he was going to coach a 4-12 football team and *fail* at re-creating Goff in his image.
As you say ... McVay and Goff are tied together. And I don't think McVay wanted it any other way. I suspect the limited props he gave Goff in camp were his way of testing Goff's resolve. Because now ... Goff has no bigger fan than Sean McVay.
I can't remember being more excited about this team's future - since after the Super Bowl win over the Titans. Felt like the road ahead was paved in gold.
I'm not ready to go that far today ... but I feel better about this team's direction than at any time since. Because of McVay.
And, yeah ... because of the Kid QB.
