I think that Bonifay was trying to make two points, la.
1. Watkins has not played up to expectations. Woods and Kupp have been meshed with Goff from game one. Big Time. Even Reynolds looked good last week in relief of Woods. But Watkins? Some flashes but too many sputters, too. Hard to explain that, but it does make one wonder, huh? I don’t give a rip what Watkins did as a Bill. I need to see him impress me while wearing the horns.
2. The other point is also legit, IMO. There are so many quality weapons for McVay to deploy and for Goff to choose from. It’s not a big stretch to say that there are so many that they each necessarily take needed snaps and targets from each other. Nice problem to have, I know. Lol. But it does tend to make any given one of them less vitally important. Including Watkins.
Speaking for myself, I stand by my previously stated position. Watkins has to blow me away finishing the season to even tempt me to give him an Alshon type contract. I hope he does, of course. But I’ve gotta see it first on the field.
