My son and I were discussing exactly your take.
And I do think that it is part of McVay's development process to have Goff often only have to read half the field.
Probably later this year (or after this year) McVay will widen the scope and allow Goff to read more, or all, of the field more often.
I think that what we saw with the Cards game when they rarely huddled, but instead walked up to the line, Goff read the D and made the calls, was a progression in his development. And he did it quite well and the Rams played faster and it made it a little harder on the opponent's D.
So right now, mostly reading only part of the field allows Goff to play faster and make fewer mistakes. Clearly it's working. The Rams are winning while Goff is developing nicely.
I've said all along that this year is not the year we should be aiming for; rather it is 2018.
That the Rams are 5-2 at this point tells me that the Rams are a bit ahead of schedule. Whether they make the playoffs or not.
