Oh, let the mental rehabilitation begin... A couple of things:
Look I get the ZN point and agree, large parts of this offense have been built around the '15 playbook of Austin misdirection and such. And I credit McVay that he didn't shackle himself to Austin by doing only this and is actually spreading it out (unlike the '15 playbook). It's working.
Until it doesn't.
That ship is only going to sail for so long in this league, and we all know it. McVay is a smarter man than me, so we'll see how long he can string this out and what his plan is to evolve Tavon's role in this offense. I'm pretty confident he's ahead of that game. If it works, I'm a fan. I just want the Rams to win and in the end am little vested in how they accomplish that. But I don't trust Tavon. In my perspective, he's an accident prone "me" player, who's limited as both a receiver and running back. If you can get him running, he can be great. But I don't trust him. Particularly on punt return. He's that high risk high reward guy that in my view has turned out to be more risk than reward. I'm sure the powers that be have crunched the numbers and are good with the fumble/TD ratio. I just literally hold my breath every time he steps back to field the ball, waiting for disaster to happen. From fielding punts on the half-yard line, to drops, to dancing, it just drives me crazy. He's the anti-Benny, and Benny ain't here any more. Keep him as your gadget guy, keep him with his misdirection, fire away. But Coach, can't we just find us a Hester or Hakim? I get these guys don't grow on trees, but you have to look to find. I'd sure like to catch my breath on these ST plays because I'm excited with anticipation, not filled with dread...
