... had what can only be called an adversarial relationship during the early years of their time together. There was a time that JJ wanted to go with Steve Walsh, for the love of Mike!
In fairly short order, though, they figured out they were far more alike than dissimilar ... and became one of the great coach / QB duos in NFL history.
From what I understand ... George Allen was not a big fan of Roman Gabriel early on. But ... over time ... that changed.
McVay is wise beyond his years. Like Wade ... who I have great confidence will get that defense pointed in the right direction ... he coaches people first. Not schemes or players. It seems like he had to figure out who he had with Goff ... from an internal standpoint. What was his emotional makeup? Did he rattle? Did he shrink when pushed? The foundation of their relationship ... it seems ... the building blocks ... was the same sort of thing Martz did with his QBs ... although a lot less profane. How does this guy react if I lean on him? How does he react if I don't pat him on the back with every good thing he does?
Again ... this is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong process. There are gonna be some valleys here! But ... every QB on every team in every league are going to have them! Again ... small sample size ... but if you can't take that away from these first three weeks ... that McVay and Goff seem to be building that strong foundation of trust ... down in the trenches ... then I don't know what else needs to happen to prove it.
I know the Rams' front office gets a lot of heat. But ... hey ... Sean McVay may end up being the hire or hires. He may be to this generation what John Madden ... in terms of being hired to coach the Raiders at age 32 or 33 ... was to the one I grew up watching the NFL.
He's that damn good.
