There does seem to be a lot of pressure to re-up a player we have total control of for at least 4 yrs. This situation seemed to have begun in an emotional place. I hope I am wrong.
It;'s because the Rams are not approaching it as having him "under control." They're approaching it as him being a special player who has earned more.
They want a happy invested AD, and they want to signal to their entire roster that they take care of deserving players...
I think they want more than that.
I think the reason they are willing to do something early is to get AD locked into a contract so that he'll be a Ram for a lot longer.
I don't believe they're negotiating for charitable reasons. They are negotiating for business reasons that go beyond the good will that comes from having a rep of taking care of deserving players.
IMO, it is was just to have a happy invested AD and a recognition that he has earned more, they would sign off on a shorter 4 year extension or opt out like it appears that AD wants.
I also want AD to be happy, and I too want him to be under a long term contract. These notions aren't irrational, but they are wants and not needs. I believe we do need him, but I also believe the team is better served, in the long run, by taking a hard stance. That sends as clear a message as going the extra mile, and it might be the best choice overall.
