The thing with media types is they build up, and they tear down. There seems to be no balance or middle ground. Either a QB is the next Tom Brady or he's the next Ryan Leaf.
They just love to predict greatness; then build a guy up so high he can't possibly ever meet those expectations; and then when he doesn't meet their high expectations he's a bust or he's an underachiever or some such thing.
I'd much rather that nothing is expected of Goff and he steadily proves them wrong (not unlike it was with Cousins) than what is happening with Wentz. Wentz is now the Messiah of the Eagles in the same way McNabb was. He has sky high expectations placed upon him by the media that he doesn't stand much of a chance of ever meeting (although, who knows, it could happen). So when he has a couple of bad games he's going to be doubted and vilified.....especially in Philly.
The media doesn't like to be proved wrong. So they assassinate the guy they anointed as the next great one when he fails to back up their predictions.
Goff is in a good place. Clearly the kid is used to being bashed in the press and given up for dead. He doesn't care what the media says and neither does McVay. It makes me root for him all the more.
And BTW, the reports coming are exactly what I've been hoping for: nothing spectacular....just visible steady progress in all areas of his game. That is far more real than glowing stories about perfect throws every time, etc.
