And preseason is not the same intensity as regular season at all.
Not to mention all the scrubs that get long minutes in a preseason game while starters rest.
So even going from 4 plus16 to 2 plus 18 regular season games will mean more injuries to good players, and a dilution of the quality of the product.

No preseason at all. Cut back to 14 games. No Thursday nights, no Saturdays, no Mondays. Just go old school and make it 14 Sundays in a row, with no bye week.
Far too many players are getting seriously hurt, and recent studies show head trauma is everywhere. They need to take care of these players, and radically reduce their chances of injury.
Go all grass fields, too, and make "spearing" illegal for every player, in every situation, unless it's found to be accidental.
IMO, it's just wrong to increase the season, as much as I love the game.
