Shanahan is an exceptional X's and O's Offensive coach. Even his harshest critics will give him that much.
There are whispers about his personality and interactions with others, including fellow coaches. I remember reading something about that, anyway.
And I'm uncertain as to his knowledge about D matters. Not saying that he's ignorant, just saying that I don't know about the extent of his D knowledge. We've seen what can happen with a one dimensional HC such as Fisher. So there is that.
I favored Shanahan in the early Ram interview process. But that was before learning about the depth of McVay.
McVay was the better hire, imo. His depth of knowledge about both sides of the ball is simply amazing. Ask Aaron Donald. And I can't recall a Ram HC with better social skills with the press, the public, or the players. Can you?
He's technique oriented, with no detail too small to overlook. His players are confident and well prepared every Sunday. The anti-Fisher in that regard.
Hired a terrific coaching staff in very short order, too. Another anti-Fisher accomplishment.
I sense that he and Snead are working hand in glove with personnel matters such as FA moves (both incoming and outgoing) and this first draft together.
I think that the Rams hit a HR with the McVay hire. Let's see if it results in wins come September.
