You don't have to line him up in the slot to get him a clean release you can put him in motion across the formation and accomplish the same.
The problem is running consistently good routes and creating separation is not his game. Fortunately Shotty demonstrated that he can be useful so hopefully an offensive minded HC can scheme him open.
He's a small dude from an offense that drew up their plays in the dirt and he's not the brightest bulb so you start with that handicap!

People have thrown to him long, and in fact he has had a couple of TDs called back, but I don't think it's his forte.
