If he is still nothing but a gadget player by the end of the season, by all means, phase him out.
Cause here's how I take it. When people say "gadget player," they mean he's not used as a pure receiver. He mixes runs of various kinds with being a receiver. He's a hybrid. But see to me he's NOT a pure receiver, never will be, and was never going to be. But he does have value as a combined yards type hybrid weapon.
In fact while advocating drafting him before the draft in 2013, I was saying THEN that he was not and would not be a pure receiver.
So it seems to me McVay has 2 clear choices.
He can embrace what Tavon DOES do well, and use him as a hybrid weapon like he was in 2015, and maybe add a little more to his tool box.
Or if McVay doesn't want that, and in fact does want Tavon to be a pure receiver (and if he can't then he has no use for him), then, the way I see it, any effort to try and make him into a pure receiver will simply prove he's not one, in which case yes he's probably gone.
The way I take the term "gadget player" then is just as a more negative, pejorative way of saying what is to me the obvious--he's not a pure receiver, will never BE a pure receiver, so you use him as the combined yards hybrid weapon that he is. "Gadjet" is just a short-hand, dismissive way of saying someone doesn't want that...if he's not a pure receiver then he has no value so dump him.
I can agree to that to this extent. If you AREN'T using him as a hybrid weapon type, then, yeah, he's just not going to be a pure receiver, so why bother.
