I have no predictions of how Gurley will perform in 2017 but to me it was obvious he had a bit of a melt down in 2016 and showed no maturity or leadership abilities in his sophomore campaign.
Regardless of how bad the
"middle school offense" in 2016 performed as a unit, TGII took a step back both physically and mentally and showed nothing that warranted him being a team captain.
I haven't lost faith in him but how he performs on the field in 2017 along with how he behaves (to a small extent with the media when the offense is might be going through a tough stretch in 2017) should give us some clues of his long term value under the new McVay regime.
