as i recall, havenstein had a foot injury in camp and late in december had an ankle injury. he missed one game. while its possible that he played injured all year and it impacted his play i dont recall there being a big discussion about it.
how is the rumor exaggerated? its not just exaggerated because you say so. there is a reason that they were 30th or worse in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters. yeah he didnt adjust...he was predictable.... moerover, i belkiev e it was in noevnmber that gurley commented that it was a hs offense. but whatever...
in any event, any way you want to cut it, boras wasnt very good as an oc and that put the whole team in a bad position.
He missed time in camp and was not ready for the season. In the final games he was playing on a bad ankle. There wasn't a big discussion about it because, frankly, OL injuries are a neglected or underplayed issue.
The rumor is exaggerated because only one SF defender said it (after game 1) then all season posters kept acting like it was just true and that many defenses said it. It was a poster driven thing, it was never real. That is, what was not real is that teams kept saying that. No...they didn't. In terms of actual play, no poster could ever know whether or not an offensive player blew an assignment or the defender read the play perfectly. It just became this cover-all style assumption, though repeated as if it were just factually true. I personally don't regard it as a real thing at all. I think that one was just in some people's minds.
The way I cut it IS that Boras was deficient as an OC---I am just more specific about the nature of the problem. So what they had was this. A first time coordinator changes the offense enough that a new install is needed, and he has never installed an offense before, and then on top of it did that during a move---when the team as a whole, coaches down to players, are being sapped by a long series of distractions. They entered the season out of sync and it showed (Gurley being not ready for the season did not help.) On top of THAT, Boras apparently (as the stats show) had trouble adjusting to the defense after the defense had adjusted to the offense. That explains why they were a decent scoring offense in the 1st quarter and then at the bottom of the league in scoring in the next 3 quarters.
