i would have thought that robinson would be a better guard then havenstein. maybe they dont want to lose robinsons athleticism on the outside if they can manage it.
Hav has that kind of in a phonebooth, Alex Boone kind of power and nastiness. He doesn't have the feet for tackle. When it comes to the pass rush, Hav always got by on smarts and anticipation. Well he did until he played hurt in 2016. Robinson does have the feet. Whether or not GR has the head for ROT is a different issue.
...
Havenstein played pretty well in 2015 but there were moments when he struggled with speed rushers. His lack of feet was already being exposed prior to any injury issues in 2016. At least that’s my read on it.
So yeah, I agree that GRob could be a better RT.
Hav might not have looked like a RT poster boy at times in '15 dz, but he got the job done. That's all that counts. Wasn't he rookie of the year at RT, or something? No sacks, few hurries allowed?
I attribute his woes in '16 to his injuries. Seems pretty obvious to me that a RT playing on one leg in that fubar '16 O would have his struggles. Heck, ALL the O players other than Britt struggled last year Big Time.
I wish GRob all the best because he's a physical freak, but I give Hav the edge to win starter spot at RT because of football smarts and reflexes.
And I kinda like Brown to clinch the RG starter spot, tbh.
GRob has had his 3 years grace period with me. Now, he's gotta really win me over.
Well it could be that once opposing defenders know his weakness, Hav’s effectiveness declines. I already acknowledged he did well in 2015, but I thought it was starting to become more evident that he struggled with speed rushers.
Maybe having the limitation of lacking the feet for OT was fine for Fisher/Boo but is not acceptable to McVay and Kromer.
How do we really know which games he was injured and which ones he wasn’t? Is anyone saying he was playing on one leg all year? I don’t think any of us really know the extent of his injuries in 2016 so it’s hard to say how much of an effect they had.
My opinion is the edge for RT and RG starters is exactly the set up the coaches are starting OTAs with. They’ve put thought into this. And I believe they are moving Hav for reasons apart from GRob.
But we shall see 43. You may very well be right…
