I tend to believe the long-term success or failure of McVay, if he is the Rams' choice, will boil down to who he is as a coach, leader, teacher, etc. than his age.
Granted ... Bill Walsh was in his late 40s when he was hired by San Francisco in 1979. But the 49ers, at that time, were every bit the mess the Rams are now. And Walsh had been a head coach for only two years before that.
Yes ... there are going to be things that McVay will learn from the hard way - by screwing them up. He has no other head coaching experience to fall back on.
But, I just feel as though this will ultimately work or not work because of the individual rather than the age.
Finally ... can't say enough about how the addition of someone like Wade Phillips ... and perhaps Norv Turner ... would shorten his learning curve.
Then again ... it could all be a mess.
In the meantime, I'll check with my Magic 8-Ball and get back to you.
