When a person goes to the media anonymously with a piece of juicy negative info, that usually means that is a disgruntled employee. A good loyal would never do anything to intentionally harm the organization;
Leaving the specifics of this story out, your sweeping generalization is not accurate. It's a false "if then" illogical statement.
There are many reasons someone may talk. You have zero evidence that anyone went to the media. Maybe the media went to him and said ,"gimme the straight scoop and I won't quote you" and the source tells him his opinion.
Maybe a loyal employee wants to help the situation. Maybe others don't see telling what they see as the truth as "harmful" to the organization.
Then, leaving motives aside, the issue is if the information was true. Spygate, they went after the guy who said Pats filmed walkthrough as someo n with an ax to grind.
Just because the information is something you don't believe does not mean it's false.
In this case, who knows? But anonymity is standard operating procedure.
