My problem btw with coaching hire discussions is that they tend to just hover around a few recognizable names, and aren't very useful
That have been successful in the NFL?
There is a reason people discuss recognizable names.
One good example is McCarthy, who was hired by Green Bay out of a losing season in SF. He didn't get the buzz the media-recognized names usually get.
What I get out of coaching discussions rarely matches results. Sometimes it does, as often as not it doesn't. So for example when John Harbaugh was hired by Baltimore, I saw no predictions of early success for him. Same with McCarthy--just an unknown, basically. There's always a dark horse who does better than the discussion predicts, and there's always a name or 2 as favorites who dominate discussion.
Are you now talking "media recognized names"? That certainly was not clear, but in any event he was on several NFL and media lists, probably not on yours.
Not only had he tutored Brett Favre, but also worked with other notable qb's like Joe Montana, Rich Gannon, Jake Delhomme, Matt Hasselbeck, and Marc Bulger.
He was widely known as a qb whisper in NFL circles.
Most football people could see that his last year in SF his offense was hit with multiple injures and his qb was a rookie Alex Smith.
John Harbaugh is an anomaly.
So no...not a good example.
